Long live the Mix-Tape

I firmly believe that anyone born AFTER 1965 and BEFORE 1990 knows the power of the mix-tape.

sure, it's a mark of my age, but in MY world.. when you like someone... you make them a tape.

of course, now in our digital age of mp3 players... kids today probably don't even KNOW what a cassette tape is. Or have no respect for John Cusak and the movie High Fidelity. or have NO idea how funny "what's a happenin hot stuff?" is when spoken by a certain Long (Duck) Dong. but again.. I date myself.

So.. yes. nowadays.. not so much on the mix-tape. However... it appears that the SPAWN of the mix-tape... the highly transferrable, won't melt-in-the-summer or get jammed in your player PLAYLIST is the key to my dedicating happiness.

yes... the playlist is now the fancy of all portable players. and I like it. in fact, just the other day, Hannikins suggested a kick-ass work-out mix. THEN.. like the magical woman she is.. a day or two AFTER she shared, she ftp'ed me just about the whole list. mama say, mama sah, mama's a rock star!

so now... on the eve of a nice long weekend.. I turn to YOU, my readers. I'm sure you've all been asked this question in varying forms before, so you should at least have an idea of what your answer would be....

WHAT is your all-time favorite song? I mean.. if you KNEW you were never going to hear music again, and you could only listen to ONE MORE SONG... what song would you choose?

please share! for anyone reading that does NOT share their favorite song... please know right now, I will find out where you live, and reprogram your home so every noise-making machine will play songs from Glitter, and ONLY Glitter.

(That's RIGHT, Erin.. I know you like MiMi... but even YOU know Glitter sucked. )

Anyways.. DO leave a comment. tell me your tune! I'll share the list (and downloadable files when possible) on monday!

Also, as an added bonus, *I* will dedicate a song to each of my commenters. It shall be a song that makes ME think of YOU, no matter WHAT your ass says is your favorite.

so DO play along.. it'll be fun, yes?

have a great weekend, everyone. let freedom ring, and all that shit.

3 Things:

1. You should check out http://muxtape.com/ it may help you with this project

2. You have to promise not to say anything about how phallic the post that will go up on my site tomorrow morning looks.

3. My absolute favorite song ever ever ever is Glory Box by Portishead.

Whoa! I have to pick JUST ONE?!!! This is a tough one. I like SO many different kinds of music. Hmmmmm....

I would say my favorite song right now is Gwen Stefani, "Yummy"...a very cool song.

My favorite of late is Jeff Buckley, "Hallelujah".

My favorite that holds great memories is "Phantom of the Opera"...basically all of the musical.

My favorite of ALL TIME? "Kiss Off" by Violent Femmes. I LOVE THEM! I saw them in concert, and it was the best ever! That song just gets me pumped up!

this is hard there are sooo many different types of great music and songs out there and i love a lot of it. i tend to usually pick favorites depending on what kind of mood im in... but if i had to pick one... one song above the rest... i might choose basket case by greenday. its always good no matter what kind of mood im in and i've consistently liked it for the longest.

No Woman No Cry, I guess. If I had to choose just one.

That would be so hard though . . .and of course, my choice would be different if you asked me tomorrow! :)

Oh, that's the Bob Marley version.

Mine changes daily but a song that just makes me smile and is easy going is the Joker by the Steve Miller band. I'm a huge fan of mixed tapes. I think I even gave them as Christmas gifts, once upon a time! :)

Really? Just one song I have to pick? You really want me to do that? Ok, right now it would have to be Ministry - "The Fall". I've been mesmorised by it lately. Don't worry it's not as hardcore as you might remember my music.

That's a toughie, Carrie, but I'll give it a go.

How about "Temptation", by New Order.

How in the world am I supposed to be one song? It changes quite frequently... however, lately I'm into "Feel This" by Bethany Joy Galeotti and Enation.

Secondly - I make mixes all the time, but usually on CDs (or yes, my iPod). I'm not sure that I ever made a "mix-tape!"

Oh, and I wanted to respond to your comment, but your email comes back as anonymous? I may just have to write a post to respond to comments!

Have a great holiday weekend!!

All time favorite song ever, is Janis Joplin's "Me and Bobby McGee". Just makes me happy. Listened to it constantly in college and still crank it whenever I hear it on the radio.

Currently though, I am really digging the new G. Love and Special Sauce disc Superhero Brother. He's my all time favorite artist and I could never pick just one favorite song by him.

Ok... I'm going real old school with my selection....

When I was a tween I LOVED I mean LOVED Michael Jackson, this is pre-weirdo phase

Anyway this song always reminds me of simplier times and my first childhood crush ( I relize in light of recent info this is kind of twisted... but I prefer to remember MJ as I did as a 12 year old) Anyhow, this is my song choice!

Thriller http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_f76PJ4P8g&feature=related

I defy you to listen and not get a flash from your childhood :)

well, if i was about to die and wanted to hear one more song, it would be "Go Rest High on That Mountain" by Vince Gill b/c we played that song at my dad's funeral, and every single time I hear that song, I feel a very strong connection to my dad. I think that would calm me considerably knowing I was about to die. :-) It's not my favorite song by any means b/c it makes me sad every time I hear it, but I do love it.

as for a favorite UPLIFTING song, it would be White Trash Wedding or Goodbye Earl by the Dixie Chicks. ;-)

I've been thinking on this all weekend and I'm just lost to just pick one song. Truly... so I will cheat and say 3:
"I'm Shipping Up to Boston" - Dropkick Murphys
"Born to Be My Baby" - Bon Jovi
"Bleeding Love - Leona Lewis.
One more may be "Sunday Bloody Sunday" - U2.

Since others have cheated, a precedent has been set so that I may cheat as well. My picks (yes, that's plural, as in "more than one pick") are as follows:

1. Chan Chan by Buena Vista Social Club
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6JEdf7XsV5g
Note: I have no idea what they are saying.

2. Flamenco Sketches by Miles Davis
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tpvpyb-PXM0
Note: Perhaps the best jazz song ever.

3. Where the Streets Have No Name by U2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpVbLm4TN3g
Note: Best song intro.

4. Ramble On by Led Zeppelin
Note: 'Cuz it's Zeppelin

5. Sympathy for the Devil by The Rolling Stones
Note: 'Cuz it's The Rolling Stones

6. Cotton by The Mountain Goats

7. Grace by Kate Havnevik
http://www.myspace.com/katehavnevik

8. Tiny Dancer by Elton John
Note: Favorite scene from Almost Famous - when they all start signing this song on the tour bus.

9. Heal Over by KT Tunstall
Note: Just a beautiful song.

10. Stack-O-Lee (as sung by Samuel L. Jackson)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=viwVs2S-wdQ
Note: A song to be blasted while speeding down the highway.

But, you know, ask me on another day and you'd likely get some variation on this list.
